Should You Get A Prepaid Or Postpaid Mobile Plan?

Are you looking around for a new cell phone provider, and you are debating between a prepaid and postpaid mobile plan? If so, know that there are more differences than when you pay for your monthly service. Here is what you need to know about these two types of plans.

Pricing

The first thing to look at is the pricing differences between plans. One of the things that you may notice is that prepaid plans tend to be cheaper than postpaid plans. However, it's important that you are comparing two similar plans when you look at the price. If your goal is to have unlimited data, then compare prepaid and postpaid plans with truly unlimited data.

For example, if a prepaid plan says that it is unlimited and the price is coming out cheaper, look for how much data you are getting. You may have a cap on how much data you can use each month at 5G speeds, and then speeds are throttled for that month to much slower speeds once you exceed your data cap. That's why it's so important that you compare the details so you know it's a fair comparison. You may prefer to pay more if it means that your data isn't throttled.

Perks

Look at the perks that you get for subscribing to a postpaid plan. You may get features that you simply do not get on a prepaid plan. This includes international service, more roaming coverage, more mobile hotspot data, a free subscription to a video streaming service, or some other valuable perk. Always consider the perks when comparing plans to see if you'll get the right use out of them.

Plans

Your prepaid plans can be quite limited when selecting a monthly plan. You tend to only have a few options from each mobile Internet provider, and they may not meet your needs. A postpaid plan will typically have more options that allow you to give you exactly what you need. Do you require more mobile hotspot data because you frequently pair your phone with your laptop? Then you may only be able to get that with a postpaid plan.

Phones

You'll also find that you have more phone options when selecting a postpaid plan. There are often promotions that can give you a free or discounted phone by committing to the service for an extended length of time. They also mean you have the ability to pay off the phone with installments so that you do not have the high upfront cost. Prepaid phones do offer promotions and discounts on certain phones, but it often requires paying for the entire phone when you sign up for the service.
